چکیده

Recent observations of thermally emitting isolated neutron stars revealed spectral features that could be interpreted as radiative transitions of He in a magnetized neutron star atmosphere. We present Hartree–Fock calculations of the polarization-dependent photoionization crosssections of the He atom in strong magnetic fields ranging from 1012 to 1014 G. Convenient fitting formulae for the cross-sections are given along with the related oscillator strengths for various bound–bound transitions. The effects of finite nucleus mass on the radiative absorption cross-sections are examined using perturbation theory.

Equation of State and Opacities for Hydrogen Atmospheres of Neutron Stars with Strong Magnetic Fields

We present an equation of state and radiative opacities for a strongly magnetized hydrogen plasma at magnetic fields B, temperatures T, and densities typical for atmospheres of isolated neutron stars. The firstand second-order thermodynamic functions, monochromatic radiative opacities, and Rosseland mean opacities are calculated and tabulated, taking account of partial ionization, for 8 1011 G ...

Ionization and dissociation equilibrium in strongly-magnetized helium atmosphere

Recent observations and theoretical investigations of neutron stars indicate that their atmospheres consist not of hydrogen or iron but possibly heavier elements such as helium. We calculate the ionization and dissociation equilibrium of helium in the conditions found in the atmospheres of magnetized neutron stars. For the first time this investigation includes the internal degrees of freedom o...

Evidence for a Mid-atomic-number Atmosphere in the Neutron Star 1e1207.4-5209

Recently Sanwal et al. (2002) reported the first clear detection of absorption features in an isolated neutron star, 1E1207.4-5209. Remarkably their spectral modeling demonstrates that the atmosphere cannot be Hydrogen. They speculated that the neutron star atmosphere is indicative of ionized Helium in an ultra-strong (∼ 1.5 × 10 G) magnetic field. We have applied our recently developed atomic ...

Atmospheres and Spectra of Strongly Magnetized Neutron Stars

We construct atmosphere models for strongly magnetized neutron stars with surface fields B ∼ 10 − 10 G and effective temperatures Teff ∼ 10 6 − 10 K. The atmospheres directly determine the characteristics of thermal emission from isolated neutron stars, including radio pulsars, soft gamma-ray repeaters, and anomalous Xray pulsars. In our models, the atmosphere is composed of pure hydrogen or he...

Hydrogen atom moving across a strong magnetic field: analytical approximations

Analytical approximations are constructed for binding energies, quantum-mechanical sizes and oscillator strengths of main radiative transitions of hydrogen atoms arbitrarily moving in magnetic fields ∼ 1012–1013 G. Examples of using the obtained approximations for determination of maximum transverse velocity of an atom and for the evaluation of absorption spectra in magnetic neutron-star atmosp...
